Water is the most essential substance for the human body. It helps the body regulate it's temperature, cushion and lubricate joints, and flush the body of wastes and toxins. Water leaves the body constantly through sweat, urine, and respiration. It is difficult for some people to drink enough water during the day. It can be especially difficult to get children to drink water, as many complain that they do not like the taste and would prefer flavored beverages.

[edit] Daily Intake

How much water a person needs to drink per day depends on many factors, including age, health, activity level, and environment. Infants who are breastfeeding or drinking formula alone do not need additional fluids. Children should drink around a liter, or four cups, of water per day. Typically, children who allowed to get a drink of water anytime they like will drink enough. Hot, dry weather, and exercise can increase the child's water requirements. Adults should drink about 2 liters, or 8 cups of water per day. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should drink more water. A well hydrated person will produce colorless or slightly yellow urine. Some vitamin supplements can turn urine bright yellow, this should not be confused with concentrated urine that indicates dehydration.

[edit] Drinking more

There are lots of ways to increase water consumption. It is wise to pack a small bottle of water for a child to take to school. Many children especially enjoy sport-top water bottles. Keeping freezer-safe water bottles in the freezer can provide a supply of cold water for errands and outings. At home, water can be made more attractive to children by adding ice, especially from interestingly-shaped ice cube trays. Adding a slice of lemon, lime, or orange, or even bananas or strawberries can add some fun and flavor. Many families keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator at all times, for those family members who enjoy really cold water. The best way for parents to encourage children to drink water is by setting a good example and drinking plenty themselves.
