[edit] Functions
The main purpose of progesterone is that is favoring the implantation of the fertilized egg and gestation. Progesterone will significantly modify the vascular and chemical properties of the uterine mucus to make it favorable for egg implantation.
When the woman is not pregnant, progesterone has other functions: he has a sedative effect onto the central nervous system and he is responsible for the thermal differences that occur after ovulation. He poses an opposing action onto the effects of estrogen on the mammary glands and uterine mucus, maintaining their functionality. When he is secreted by the supra-renal glands and ovaries, he will act as an intermediary in the synthesis of androgen and corticosteroids.
[edit] Pathology
If the progesterone secretion is low, it results in infertility, because the fecundation of the egg can not occur. It is treated by administrating progesterone during the last period of the menstrual cycle.
[edit] Therapeutic Actions
Natural progesterone along with his synthetic derivatives are used to prevent fake birth risks, and as a treatment in menopause and menstrual problems.
