Pregnancy Week 6

This week is important in the development and implantment of the embryo's nutritional systems.

[edit] What Happens to the Embryo During Week 6

The embryo starts developing human characteristics. Its small rudimentary heart starts beating. One should not expect to able to hear the small heartbeats just yet, beacuse this often happens later in the fetal development. Its eyes and ears start to take shape. The digestive system becomes more complex once the stomach and the intestines are developed. Now, the embryo looks more like a small baby fish rather than a human being.

The neural tube that will later become the spinal cord, desperately needs folic acid so it can prevent any defects of development. This is why a supplement with folic acid is still necessary.

[edit] Changes in A Woman's Life During Week 6

A woman that is 6 weeks pregnant does not look pregnant yet, and some of them might not even have any pregnancy signs or symptoms. Still, the embryo is very busy growing. At this point some vaginal leakage might occur, colored in a milky shade, that often last until birth. They are the result of the congestion of the genital organs. If this leakage causes pain or if it has an unpleasant smell, the doctor should be immediately warned.

Some pregnant women will start to gain weight right away. The body starts retaining more fluids, which causes the woman's shapes and face to go rounder. Sometimes, one can see certain behavioral modifications, the need of eating certain aliments and so on.

Normally, pregnancy signs continue or appear during this week. If you are in the classical limits, you will feel sick, and not only in the morning. Other typical signs are : painful breasts, tiredness and frequent urination. All these are perfectly normal, even if they seem annoying. The good news is that they will not last too long.
